How long does interior paint last? And is it okay to throw it out?

If I used it 2 years ago and have a half can left, is it still good? Also, if you have leftover paint that you do not want, is it safe to put out with regular trash?

If it's only two years old, and you can stir it up so that it's smooth and even (with no clumps), then I'm pretty sure it's still good. I know that I've used paint that old with no ill effects. I'm not sure how old is too old - but two years is not too old.

As for disposal, different cities have different policies. My town wants you to mix the old paint with cat litter or saw dust and let it dry out before they will take it. Other towns have a "household hazardous waste" (HHW) collection day, or have a HHW drop off location. I even know of a few towns that will take old paint (and solvents and so forth) and give them to inner city charities to help with rehabbing old homes.

You could check your city's web site to see what their policy is. Look for the public works department, and see what they have to say about household hazardous waste disposal.

Good luck.
