How do I remove the Rawlbolts that connect my deck to my house?

The torrential rain we've been experiencing in the UK this summer has helped me identify that my deck has been laid with a slight slope toward my house! Grrrr... So I need to relay it, removing the joist that is bolted along the side of my house (using Rawlbolts). However, I can't work out how to remove the rawlbolts without drilling them out. I wonder if there is an easier way?

Hi - Loosen the nuts on the bolts. Knock a chisel/bolster between the top edge of the timberand the wall just enough to create a small gap. You then have two options -
1. Use a big, coarse toothed hacksaw blade. Wrap the end you are going to hold in a bit of rag or masking tape to protect your fingers. Use the blade with the teeth pointing upwards so that you are cutting as you pull the blade. You are less likely to break the blade doing it this way rather than trying to cut on the forward stoke as would be usual way.
2. Use a reciprocating saw which is, basically, an electric equivalent of above.

Buy a Rawlbolt and dismantle it. You will see how tightening the nut on the outside end pulls on the wedge-shaped inner end of the threaded bolt. The wedge expands a four-lobed barrel, forcing the lobes against the sides of the hole in the wall, so that they get a grip.

You will see that, to remove the wooden joist, you will need to remove the nuts from all the bolts and pull the joist away. That will leave a row of bolts projecting from your wall. If the slope is only a little bit out, you may be able to drill new holes lower down on the joist, remount it and put the nuts back on. However, if a big change in slope is needed, you will need to drill a new row of holes (prop up your joist to the right level, and drill through the existing holes in it). Then you can either fit new Rawlbolts (leaving the old ones hidden under the joist and deck) or, for economy, re-use the old Rawlbolts. To get them out, replace the nuts to protect the ends of the thread on the bolts, and give the nuts a firm tap or two with a hammer. That will drive the wedge-shaped part back, and the lobes will lose their grip in the hole, allowing you to withdraw the entire Rawlbolt and re-use it.

I'd go and get the house checked just to make sure that theres been no settlement in the house due to all the torrential rain.
It would be normal practice for a deck to slope away from the house rather than towards it.

Best to cut them off with an electric disc -cutter/grinder if you can and leave them in the wall ,redrill and fix the joist at the new height with new bolts..

Like BT said . they are not removable. you have to cut them off.If you have a friend with a sawsall that is the fastest way. Or you may be able to rent one for a few hours. If you are going to reinstall your existing deck you will also need to replace those bolts so you will need a hammer drill. Don`t know if you have these tools or a friend with these tools. But you will need them.

The chances of removing them are slim, the job will be done in minutes using a angle grinder. It cuts them through as if they were butter, job done.

You will find that if you dismantle the house from the outside inwards, eventually you will get to the desk, then you can just carry the desk away and place where appropriate.
