What is the best way to remove an old border wallpaper? |
Attempting to remove a border in a room of our home and we're killing ourselves with all the scraping - there has to be a better way. We've tried applying a wall paper stripper we picked up at walmart but it doesn't help much at all. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Steam is the best way. If the paper is old and does not respond well, get a scoring device. It will puncture small holes in the paper so steam get get under it. Both the scoring device and steamers can be found in all home improvements stores. I believe some will rent the streamer. Good Luck! I have always used a mix of 50/50 (equal parts) fabric sftner like downy and hot water. wipe it over the wall paper and let it sit. Reapply if needed. Then the paper comes off without scraping or leaving paste. If the liquid stripper didn't work--you will need a "steamer". It is hot work but it is the best for tough jobs. Ask to rent a wallpaper steamer. Good luck on that one. Although I have heard the Downy solution before, I did not try it. I just put new border over the old. Good luck. Lori I know you're frustrated. I started removing wallpaper from our old houses kitchen and found 4 layers total. The best and I mean the best thing that helped us was: ammonia and hot water. Use a bucket and put about two cups of ammonia in the bucket and then add hot water (as hot as you can stand putting your hands in). Then use a rag and rub the wallpaper. If you have already scored the paper (have a few tears here and there) it will help a little more. The mixture soak in an deactivates the glue. |
