What to do if you think lead dust may have gotten on your clothes?

I am stripping and repainting my front porch banister. It it the first time anyone has ever done this. I am going through paint that is probably 40+ years old and may have been lead based. This sometimes flings paints chips and dust all over me. If there is in deed lead in this stuff and its on my clothing what should i do? Is it safe to wash out, or should i chuck those old clothes. I am afraid to put them with my regular laundry , don't want the animals or myself to get poisoned in anyway or add to our already strained sewers. Any thoughts?

Lead is harmless unless it gets into your system.
It's far more important to keep the dust out
of your airway on the job. Chips are harmless
unless eaten.
Since it's only a 'sometime` exposure, just take
simple precautions: wash your work clothes
separately after dusting yourself off outside
before entering the house, and you'll be fine.

My thought is you are way over thinking this. There is more actual lead carried to the sewer from the solder joints in older homes than in is contained in the dust on your clothes.

The only major concern is perhaps any excessive a,mount of paint chips that may be collected on the ground around the work site, I'd clean those up

The almost hysterical reactions to substances such as lead and asbestos have people believing that if you touch asbestos or lead at breakfast, you'll be dead by supper. The facts are, asbestos is not toxic, its the dust that gets trapped in you lungs over repeated periods of exposure that causes problems and lead in household good levels has statically no effect on adults (its the wee ones for which to be concerned). I blame most or all of this on the lawyers

jeffreys right, I've been playing w/ lead solder for years (29.5).I'm not dead, don't act wierd, pick my nose in public or anything else. Your more likely to be killed in car crash than all these other things you hear about

well I would be using old clothes,i would guess it would take a wkend to do. after that wkend, throw the cloths away. shower good when u finish in the evenings. its not gonna kill u but it is harmful

At least wear a good dust mask while working. I would just wash my work clothes by themselves. Try not to expose others to the dust. Be on the safe side, lead and asbestos etc are proven to cause HEALTH problems.
