What's the best way to get started on a basement remodel?

I've been wanting to get going on this project for 3 years, but I'm just not sure where to start. I just want to transform my basement into a clean place for my kids to play, a bright place to do laundry, and some storage space.

Call some contractors and get estimates.

If you plan to do it yourself, the basic steps are:

Address any water/leakage issues
Frame out the walls
Install electrical
Sheetrock and texture
Paint
Flooring
Finishing.

first thing i'd do is go down there and measure and scetch out the floor plan as it is. then sit down to the desk with a big sheet of paper, a ruler and pencils. draw out what you want. then you take that to the lumber store, some of them have CAD PROGRAMS, and will help you fine tune your plan and generate a material list. buy the materail and your off to remodeling. good luck.

Start by tearing everything out and just do it or call some local contractors and get prices.

you have to do framing on your basement including coving duct, ceiling and something else.
secondly you have electrician install plug and light housing.
thirdly about plumbing if you do not have experience about it i suggest you have to hire someone to help you.
fourly you put drywall on the framing and do mudding and sanding and painting
finally you have to do flooring or put carpet on the floor.

FYI: Be carefull most state governments require that any basement living space have egress. If there is a couch or T.V. then it is considered living space. Also check with your homeowners insurance policy to see if you will void your policy if your basement is finished and not included on policy should something happen :)
