What kind of electrical cable must I install in an exterior-facing wall in my house?

Right now there is some deteriorated steel-jacketed cable in the wall, but I have plenty of new plastic cable I could easily run...what is a typical building code for an exterior wall?

The same as for an interior wall. You only need underground/outdoor rated electrical wire for outside applications.

ROMEX.

Look at the label on the plastic jacket, if it states NM, non metallic cable rated at what ever amp you want, home use, usually 20 amps ( should say 600 amps), hope this helps

it depends on which state you live in. But if the wire is not expose to the elements there should be no problem with running the romex in the wall. Please make sure you disconnect any power before you attemp to remove the old wire. Good Luck
