How do I hook up a 4 wire dryer to 3 a wire receptacle?

My dryer has a 4 prong plug, and the receptacle I want to plug it into only has 3 slots... Is it possible to change the cord on the dryer to make it work?

call an electrician

Yes: you could change the cord, or just change plug.
Plug will be probably less expensive, however than entire cord. 4 wire to 3 receptacle is not the problem at all.
After you will cut wire, there will be 2 wires for power, usually black and red, the other 2 usually white and green, you tie together and connect to ground hokup in plug, wich has always diferent look from the power ones. Goo Luck

You have to replace the plug on the dryer, you can get it at Home Depot.

If your existing receptacle does not have both a ground and a neutral in the wiring, the dryer cord can be changed. If the wire has both a neutral and a ground and two hot leads, change the receptacle to bring it in compliance with the existing code.

yes if u can do it yourself if not try to hire a handyman or electrician

NO ! never change the cord on the dryer, 2 for hot 220v, 1 neutral, 1 is very importanc that the grounding wire for safety. If a neutral wire tucking inside the receptacle box that you don't need wire a new cable, just change the receptacle. Good luck.

If your dryer has a four prong plug, then it is likely because it requires both 110 volts and 220 volts. This is a common electric range plug.

If that is the case, you CANNOT change the plug that is on the dryer. You MUST provide that dryer with both hots, a neutral and a earth ground.

Looks to me like you need to run a new line over to the dryer, appropriate wire size, probably 8 awg but refer to the dryer manual. You need four wires, two hots, a neutral and the ground.

happy drying,
John

Replace the plug on the dryer. Should be able to get one pretty easily and install without much trouble.

-Cut the power off,,change the plug-in itselfnot the cord,,,if u go from a 4 to a 3 ur short cutting one prong,and can cause over heating,tripping breakers,and a dammaged plug,socket,wire or breaker box dammage,,worst case a fire.
--and if its under warranty it wouldnt cover if the cord isnt factory reccommended.

Leave the 4 prong plug on the dryer and replace the receptacle. Here's why.
An older appliance with a 3 prong plug has a solid jumper on the appliance itself. When converting a 3 to a 4, you simply remove this jumper and the white [neutral] goes to the terminal bolt, and the isolated ground wire goes to the spot that was jumpered.
On your dryer, since it came wired for a 4 prong cord, you would have to make up a jumper wire/ribbon , there won't be one on there. Replace the recepracle [outlet] instead. It will also be cheaper than buying a new range cord. wiring diagrams are on the box.
