How do I install tile around a glass block window in the shower?

I will be installing a glass block window in my shower area. I know that I need backerboard in the tub surround but do I put the window in first or do the tile job first? (I will be removing an old window with wood trim that is there now.)

Do the window first.

When you install the backerboard (I use Hardi-backer exclusively these days), also put the hardbacker in the window opening (window ledge, sides and top). If there is no ledge, i.e. the glass block is flush or almost flush with the wall, then stop the hardi-backer 3/4 inch back from the edge of the window.

I then use a material called Red Guard, which can be found in the tile section of any Home Depot or the like. Use fiber glass tape in all the corners and any seams. Coat the hardibacker with a minimum of 3 coats of the Red Guard; 4 coats in the corners. When the Red Guard dries, you have a completely waterproof membrane on top of the hardi-backer (which is also waterproof, by the way).

Then when you tile, use 1/4 round trim to finish off the tile edge, rounding it into the glass block.

I prefer to wrap tile all the way around any window opening, and above the window by at least one tile width or six inches. Going all the way to the ceiling is fine.

After you grout, before you use the shower: wait a few days until all the moisture is gone from the grout. I prefer to wait a week when I can, but at least 2 or 3 days. Seal the grout with a modern clear sealer, the type you wipe on until it stops soaking in, then wipe off the excess. Stone Tech is an excellent brand, but there are others. Get the type that is a sealer only, not a color enhancer. After the sealer dries in a day, carefully mask around the window opening on the tile, and also mask on the glass block, leaving a very thin opening where the 1/4 round joins the glas block. Use a good grade caulking (I prefer a polyeurethane) and carefully caulk all around the joint. This is extra insurance your surround will be waterproof.
