What type of thread would be used for sewing tarpaulin? |
I'd like to make a simple backpack out of tarpaulin. Getting the tarp will be easy. But, what type of thread would be ideal? Does anyone have any additional suggestions regarding the seams? nylon /dacron /cotton, tweed or hemp is good also, but for weathering, a nylon/cotton is ok. double stitch, zig-zag or learn how Sails are sewn. A Sail Stitch is one of the strongest stitches known. Simple Pack, use a double blind stitch with a whelp or use the french seam double blind stitch with a whelp. If I was sewing this I would probably use ordinary sewing thread and I would double-stitch the seams for durability. I would choose this thread because tarpaulin is not really thick and you match the thread to the "fabric" and I would not choose thicker thread because they are difficult to work with compared to standard thread. Another suggestion for strong seams is making felled seams and in this method the raw seams would be enclosed. |
