How do you get rid of sticky stuff from an ethernet cable?

We taped our ethernet cable down to the carpet with masking tape for a year, and now need to clean it off; however, there's sticky residue left on the ethernet cable after we peeled off the masking tape. We've tried Purell, nail polish remover, and I've heard of using rubbing alchohol, but would anything else work?

Alcohol or nail polish cleaner do not dissolve the glue, that's why that does not work.

A tiny bit of oil will dissolve it and you can rub it off. That's why the peanut-butter is suggested.
Put some oil on a tissue and let it work for a minute; then rub it off.

Be careful the oil does not get into the cable, and be sure to clean it all off with a fresh tissue.

Apparently either mayonnaise or peanut butter on a piece of cloth will remove it.

WD40 or GOO GONE either will work well

Use a commercially available product called "Goo Off" Available in any good department or hardware store

Make sure to use this stuff in a ventilated area. It smells terrible (I use an OSHA mask when using it)

A good cleaner like 409 should do it. Just saturate your cleaning cloth and wipe away the glue residue.

A small piece of cloth or a used fabric softner sheet that you get out of the dryer dabbed in Pine Sol that you may have in your kitchen cleaning supplies would clean it.
