How much of a gap do I leave when installing hardwood floors between a brick fire place? |
I am installing hardwood floors in my house. I know you need to leave a gap in between walls for expansion. I was planning on using trim to cover the gaps. I have a brick fire place that I will not be putting trim on do I still need to leave a gap??If so how much?? about 3/16ths of an inch or so If the wood has been acclimated to your home prior to install, leave no gap at all. I have argued this with a number of people. I'm a builder in Mass., and all the homes that I have built or remodeled, the hard wood butts tight. I have been in 100 year old homes, and the floors look fine. yes, definitely, with the heat from the fireplace (and even without it) the wood floor is going to expand/contract, just leave a small gap, you should still cover it with quarter round on the bottom of the baseboard if you don't want it to show |
