How close to the street can you build a garage? How much driveway do you have to have?

I live in jasper county(newton) iowa and would like to build a garage connecting onto the front of my existing garage. Does anyone know where i can find this information either online or by calling? If so where? I have a ranch with an integrated garage and I want to build the new one over part of my big driveway, can it be a 2 stall, how close can I build to the property line?

I live in Iowa also and am currently building a garage too. I was told to look down the street and build so that my garage doesn't stick out further than anyone elses.

This made sense to me. In Newton you should contact your local building code inspector or city hall and follow their recommendations.

If you need more information I except email and IM.

You would have to check with your zoning commissioner. You may need a building permit for this as well. The zoning commissioner will be able to tell you how many feet from your property line and from the public access est. Check with your county.

The answer is contact the Jasper County building and zoning dept if it has one,or the equivalent. The laws are so varied nationwide its impossible to answer unless some one from your county already knows and this I think is the only sensible responce I could come up with.

Call your City Hall. That is also where you will get a permit to build
