How can I keep my hot bedroom cool/cold this summer without running up the electricity bills? |
Are theyre any alternatives to plug in fans & air conditioning?? Cool and/or Cold are probably relative to your tolerance level. Have you a window? a ceiling fan on low won't use a lot of power, and will make it feel a lot cooler. also use a few lights as possible, since they will generate heat. if you have large animals that give off a lot of body heat, keep them out. if possible expose hardwood floors. keep shades down, and maybe plant a already big tree outside to cast a shadow on that end of the house. If the relative humidity is fairly low (under 20%) then a portable "swamp" cooler will work. Otherwise the only thing that can be done is to insulate your attic area and replace single glazed windows with energy efficient ones. Most heat loss/gain is through the roof and windows. Place a fan in your window and turn it on all night long to pull in cool air, then in the morning close the window and the bedroom door to keep the cool air inside your room as long as possible. Repeat this procedure every night. You can buy a 5000 BTU window ac unit at wal-mart for 100.00. The remaining 900.00 will be far more than enough to pay the difference added onto the electric bill for 2 years. It makes the room awefully dark, but tinfoil on the windows works wonders. Nasty divorce... open the windows buy some battery operated fans, lol Heat rises. |
