My motion sensor light stays on all the time, what is the problem?

After adding an outlet yesterday, when we turned the breaker back on my motion detector light just stays on all the time. I've tried all the adjustments and nothing changes this. Is this something I can fix or do I need a new light? Serious answers only please.

Is there any way I can get some real answers for my question? I'm reporting these idiotic ones.

Some lights have the ability to be controlled on manual or automatic depending on the number of times that the switch for the light is switched on and off.You may need to kill the power then allow it to go thru its warm up routine again(When it tests itself prior to operation.when initially powered up)Sometimes tripping the breaker and then turning back the power on can remedy the problem.

If the light is controlled by a photocell(a device that stops it switching on until its dark) then it could be that which is faulty as they tend to stay powered up when they fail so people can still see in the dark.

need more info on what changed when the outlet was changed
or
sometimes it might need reset because the power was off
the instructions should be in manual that came with the light
sometimes it is reset with the light switch

Take it to the shop, see what they advise.

Too sensitive ... turn down the sensitivity.

if you cant change the sensor i would take it back and get a new light.some are lemons

make sure no moving items are within the sensor like plants, pets, passing cars etc. turn down the sensitivity.

Have you checked the sensitivity level on the sensor? Your sensitivity level could be to high thus keeping the light on all the time. It could also be due to moth's or other night bugs crossing the sensor causing it to come on. That happens a lot with our back door sensor and our poor Goats complain because the light goes on then wont go off for a long, long time *lol*.
Anyway if you still have your instructions, check and see how to set the sensitivity level and then if that's not the problem see if it's due to moths or what ever causing the sensor to stay on.
Hope this helps, if all else, it could be that the light fixture is messed up or that you have a bad sensor and will have to replace it. If you just got it you can take it back to the store you got it from with your reciept and exchange it for a new one at no cost.

quit moving in front of it

It's set too sensitive, and is detecting the motion of the earth.

If you have tried all the adjustments and sensitivity settings then it could be possible that your motion detector has "burned out". This happens often in motion lights. When you are turning the breaker off and on, sometimes the surge of power can cause the sensor to burn out, therefore not working anymore. It could also have returned the sensor to a "photocell" sort of application. In this case it will stay on all the time. You might need a new fixture. Seriously, motion sensors are so easy to burn out that I would not be surprised if it has just went bad and you need a new one. I get them all the time at work, people have them for maybe a month and the sensor goes bad.

On ur motion light there is a setting inbetween the lights a little switch, i believe most slide back and forth, u need to reset it

if it didnt do it before you added the outlet....then the answer is probably with the outlet.

It sounds like the sensor sensitivity is up to high. Check the instructions. Some of the motion detection lights also have a switch that makes it so that they can be a normal light or a motion sensor light. Again check your instructions. If this doesn't help call an electrician.

Could be the sensitivity is to high, try turning it down.

If that doesn't fix it, some sensors have a switch to change between motion detection, and always on, if you have the option make sure those settings are correct.

Many of these things have a switch to set how long the light stays on after motion is detected. Usually the options are something like 5, 10, 15 minutes. If this setting is really high it could make it seem like the light doesn't go off, especially if you go look at it and reset that timer.

Finally, if none of the above help, cover the sensor with a piece of duct tape, and see if that causes the light to go off. If it does, then you know that the sensor is pointing at something that keeps triggering it. Could be a pet, or something moving in the area. If the light still doesn't go out, and there is not a switch setting for always on, you have a bad sensor/unit and need to replace it.

Hope this helps,
Cheers :)

1. You should clean the motion detector lens
2. Make sure there are no tree branches in the lens' view
3. Make sure there is no protective plastic film on the lens'
4. Turn down the sensitivity
5. Check for the option of constant power in which you would operate the light from a switch vs. motion sensor
