How do you clean a feather bed and pillow?

w/o going to the dry cleaners. It is a queen size feather bed so it is way too big for the washer.

Considering I'm Truckinotter's partner, I agree with her. I take the covers off the feather beds and wash them. NEVER EVER throw a feather pillow or a comforter in the wash. You can't get them dry enough and you will ruin them. The smell of moldy feathers is horrible. Take your items out on a good strong sunny day and let them air and sun all day. Make certain to turn them occasionally so that all areas get sun. If you have a laundry line, hang what you can. I usually put the pillows on top of the garden shed. Make certain you give it a good airing...speaking of, it's a nice day and I aught to put mine out. Thanks for the reminder! :)

We have two queen size feather beds and never wash them, but they have removable covers we wash. Occasionally we take them outside on a strong sunny day, hang them over the laundry line, beat them with the broom handle and let them soak up the sun. But don't leave them out too long to gather moisture when the sun starts going down. I don't know about hotrodheddas suggestion--I guess it really depends on how old they are or if they've already started breaking down or how dirty they really are. Good luck.

w/-out going to the dry cleaners, you can hand wash it with woollite &/or Biz Bleach (color-safe). My grandma has hand-washed mine before and it came out like new! I would not have tried it myself because I thought it would ruin the down but she stuck mine in her washing machine (queen-size) and used a broom stick to push it around and wash it in the washer. the only down-side to this is drying it. once you dry it in the dryer, sometimes some of the feathers can readjust out of place and bunch up in the corners.

you have no choice but to have it dry cleaned, cleaning yourself will just ruin it and you will not be able to enjoy it anymore as it wont be the same before you clean it yourself

Size is definitely a problem... but if your pillow will fit in the washer, than wash it. But remember to dry it very well. Feather will smell if it's not dried completely. Usually double cycle on a dryer will do it. I have being washing my comforter (king size) in a washing machine for years, and never any problem.
