How do I get paint off of old brick walls?

Our house was built in 1885 .There is paint from previous owners on the brick where the porch was .How do we get it off?

NO!! No sand blasting or power washing! Brick that old won't like it.

It will take a bunch longer, but the best way to remove paint from brick is with muriatic acid, gentle scraping, and a stiff-bristle (not wire) brush. Then wash it gently with soap and water and repeat as necessary.

SAND BLASTING.

Try a power washer. You can rent them at most hardware stores.

you need a sand blaster it a machine that blast sand kinda
like you use sand paper just a lot easier

If it won't damage the brick too much, you could have it sand blasted off. I'd call a professional who knows about old brick, though, before I did anything to it.

My parents actually paid extra money when they built their home in the 1960s to get Old Chicago Brick. It was old brick that had been salvaged from Chicago buildings that were torn down. The brick was discolored with soot, paint, etc. For that brick, the discoloration was viewed as "patina."
