How can I stop my bath facuet from running when switching on the shower? It has Three handles?

How can I stop my bath facuet from running when switching on the shower?I have pressure its the hot more so then cold. i have 3 handle knobs center 1 is for shower?

The center valve isn't exactly a valve as such as it only diverts the flow from the faucet head in the tub to the shower head in the wall. It should turn far enough to totally close off the route to the tub faucet head and force all of the water to flow through the shower head. There is a 2nd kind, where the diverter only opens a route to the shower head and there is a separate lever or button on the faucet head in the tub which you have to pull up on to close off the faucet head. I replaced one of these for a lady friend and found out all about the single valve diverter kind. The diverter developed a leak inside the wall behind the cover plate.

im with rowl.. remove the center diverter and got to a plumbing supply and replace it.. only outher way i know is to replace the tub spout with one that has the pull up diverter on it

Replace the rubber washer on the diverter valve.
