How and what products do I use to paint a cement floor inside the home?

I ripped up the carpet in my family room and would like to paint the cement floor. Can anybody help with what products to use? I have a gas fireplace in the room also, will a painted floor hold up? Thanks for any help!

A painted floor will hold up.
Its best if you go to your local hardware store or Lowes or Homedepot and tell them what you want to do.

They have all kinda of different paints you are looking for.
One kind might not be what your looking for, so its best to talk to an expert in that department.

Good Luck!

There is a special ceiler you can bye at the Lowes hard ware store, or another home Depot etc, . We put it on years ago on our floors , Just ask at the service desk. Pem

1st Get the floor very clean. Any dirt you don't get up will be trapped forever. A product called TSP will do it, where laytex gloves.

2. Then use a primer. Their is a primer called Kilz you can get almost anywhere BUT VENTILATE WELL! Its stinks.

As far as your paint. The main thing is not to use an oil based paint. Cement and brick breathes and moves. Use a laytex otherwise it will crack and peel. Also run a dehumidifer if its a basement.

Benjemin Moore makes great paint--but if you use a good primer you don't have to use an expensive paint. Kilzs is the cheapest primer that really does the job dime for dime (remember ventiliate!).

Good luck!

Ask at the Home Depot or Lowe's for a product called DRYLOK Concrete Floor Paint. Olympia also makes a product for painting exterior concrete patios.

A concrete paint will give you a very opaque look. If you want a more modern or contemporary look, try a concrete STAIN. Stains will give the floor some color but in a more mottled look so that the floor will have more character. This may work for you since it's in your family room and will be near the fireplace-dirt and such will blend in more and not be so noticeable between cleanings! ;)

You may also want to seal it. Ask at the hardware store about sealers too. This will help prevent stains from soaking into the porous concrete.

There are cement paints and stains that you can use to change the look of the room. However you need to determine if the floor has been sealed. If it has you will need to strip the floor before you can paint or stain it. I think you can test to see if it is sealed by dropping a bead of water on the cement. If it spreads out and absorbs into the cement it is not sealed. If the water beads and stays on top of the cement it has been sealed.

Stop by your local Home Depot or Lowes to see what types of paints and stains they have available.

The fireplace should not be a problem. The heat should not radiate to the floor too much otherwise you probably would have melted the carpet.

Good luck!

This is a job you want to do right the first time. I would recommend an epoxy product. It will cost some money but the cost is worth the results and the added durability. Spend some time with the directions paying special attention to the section on concrete preparation. You may have to etch the floor and it must be absolutely free of all old wax, paint, sealers and so on. Here I go again telling you too much. Different products have different preparation methods. Just follow the directions religiously. The manufacturer knows how the product will work best.

A quality paint, applied correctly to a properly prepared surface, should be very durable. I have some very old paint on my front porch that was applied correctly and I can't blast it off with a commercial pressure washer.

BTW, some of the products you have to choose from offer glitter, sparkles, and other things to dress up the appearance of the finished floor. Traction enhancing agents are also available for some products, they can go a long way toward preventing falls.

Don't forget to stay out of the corners, the stuff I am suggesting will take hours to a day or more to cure well enough to walk on. If you paint yourself into a corner you will be there for a while...

You can buy concrete floor paint anywhere paint is sold.
You just use a roller with a handle & roll it on.
Don't think this is silly but many people truly paint themselves into a corner. Start from the farthest point from the exit and paint yourself in the direction of the exit.
Open doors & windows for ventilation if the odor is strong.

u could use benjamin moore
