What is the best type of underlay to use for wood floor?

what type of underlay should i use for fitting a real wood floor to a concrete floor . I would prefer an all in one type so im not messing about putting down a DPM and underlay . Suggestions please and where is best place to buy it . Thanks

The boards i have bought are 18mm thick and are solid wood ( oak ) , can i put them down onto a concrete floor using the floating floor procedure ?

Ideally fit it using a self adhsive underlay such as elastilon, it's great for laying hardwood floors over concrete

I would recommend you still use a DPM as failue to maintain a stable moisture content in hardwood floors can cause massive swelling / shrinkage. I personally have seen 6 inches of cross grain swelling due to poor instalation

If you are attaching a REAL wood floor then you need to glue it down. As opposed to a floating wood floor.

They make real wood engineered floating floors. Some come with an attached underlayment (like a thin foam back) But I prefer the floating floors with the separate underlayment.

If you need to lay down a wood underlayment before you put down real wood (Tongue and grove 3/4" thick) floor then I prefer a smooth plywood as opposed to OSB. My personal preference is birch but pine can work just as well.

3/4 inch real wood? You cannot glue that down and w/o building a " false floor" w/ sleepers and 3/4 ply on that And then you can nail / staple that down . You ll have to go to a floating floor or a glue direct engineered floor which there are some great looking ones that you cant tell the difference from a 3/4 floor GL

I think there is only 1 type of underlay for wood flooring its quite thin white and comes on a roll not 100% sure.

First things First. You need to check your concrete floor for any moisture migration. Take 4 pcs of aluminum foil about 12' long x whatever width roll is.
Take and place this 4 pcs. at different areas of the floor. Take duct tape and tape all 4 sides of foil down onto the floor.
Wait 24 hrs. and pull of foil - if there is any moisture on either the backside of foil or on the concrete floor - I would consider another type flooring that is impervious to moisture.
A floor can look dry but still wick moisture up through it.
I hate to burst your bubble - but I hate to see you waste your money on an installation.
If you are using real wood flooring it is probably 5/8" -3/4" thick and needs a floor sleeper system installed first. Again, only if the moisture tests is negative with the foil.
But remember this is raising your total floor height and will shorten head height in basement doors and ceilings.
I would use a 1" x 3" furring sleeper, glued and tapcon (concrete screws that require drilling),check flooring manufacturers nailing procedure as you may want to increase sleeper size to 1-1/2" thickness. Install sleepers on all 4 sides of room and on 16" center spacing. Run sleepers perpendicular to the way you want your floor planks to run.
Locate any floor drains you now have and either make accessible or seal up tight - as they will eventually lose water in trap and gas will escape and stink.
Good Luck
