How do you know what length spindles to buy for a staircase?

I removed the old spindles from my staircase and I want to go out and buy new ones. When I went to Home Depot I realized they came in 30, 32, and 34 inch lengths. How do I know what length to buy?

To Johnykay, You really need to find some place else to release your rage. If you had all th facts then MAYBE you would have actually made a point in your rambling. I have a professional installing the new ones so I guess I don't need that ''brain'' you suggested. Please find a healthy hobby as you obviously need one.

Measure the existing ones.
You will find that there is a long and a short spindle for each tread.
The spindle bottom section can be trimmed , but, most turned spindles are set so that the bases are the same length & the tapered ends on top are the same diameter.
Just trimming the tops will look funny, having one fat & one skinny spindle on the same tread.
Depending on the angle of the staircase & height of railing ,you could need a 30" & a 32 " for example.
If the existing turned spindles are properly installed. the holes in the railing will all be the same size.
Best regards

yepp measure the old ones or better yet take one with you to home depot

Buy the longest ones. You will likely have to cut various lengths.

all the same just make sure the angle is correct

The outer part of the stair tread takes the 32".The side next to the riser take the 34".You will have two lengths of spindles on every stair. The longer spindle is always on the inside because of the angle of the hand rail.

go for the 34 ones,
as they have to be cut all the same lengh
maybe two cuts, one at the top, one at the bottom

but take your time ........

measure the old ones.

im pretty sure you would want to get 32" spindles if not 30" the ones at my apt. are 32"
