Any suggestions for buying a water softener for our house?

We are on a continuous feed well. We have 4 kids and 2 adults. Kids are 15 & 16 yr old girls and 8 yr girl and 3 yr old boy. Our well pump is 3/4 HP and we can run all three showers in the house at the same time and no dip in water pressure is noticed. (Not that we EVER run all 3 at once). Any suggestions on DO IT YOURSELF or have it done. Size of units. Any and all comments/suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Go to Google and you will find lots of sites that will lead you through the buying and installation processes. If you can do some basic plumbing you should be able to do it yourself. We have well water and the softener has made a tremendous difference in washing, mineral deposit build-up and performance of the hot water heater. The unit itself will probably not cost much more than a few hundred dollars. Expenses will include the cost of salt and extra electricity and water when the unit regenerates.
Do not fall for any pitch that promises to soften your water magnetically.

I generally recommend to "call the culligan man!"(I receive NO royalty from or work for them(LOL)) Softeners usually require regular maintenance & have short life spans.Call your local water softener companies.Locally, their monthly rates for a 1 or 2 year lease,including regular service, are very reasonable.

My wife and I bought a house here in Virginia and when we moved in discovered that the water smelled like rotton eggs, sulphur. We sought various remedies that included softeners etc., ad nauseum up to installation costs of over 2500 + dollars. Remember that you have to maintain a water softener system. We discovered that all we needed was air in our tank. Costs 78 dollars and the water is sweet as can be. Remember that water softeners require salt and other stuff. If you really, really don't need a water softener I would suggest not getting one.

Not to complicated to install. Read the directions..But, type in WATER SOFTENERS and do your homework. Don't save $20 to have the wrong size

Do dome basic research on water. Try www.awwa.org for information. Identify what mineral is present by analyizing your well water. Then look up online or ask someone what the solubility of these minerals is in water. If the lab analysis shows nothing present at or close to solubility limits then you do not need a softner. If you know you need a softner for sure then any major brand softner should be able to do the trick...
