How can i repair my new countertops that got some scraches on them? |
Over the weekend i and some people over and one of the guests cut up some limes on my counter top. They are brand new, and are the black speckle type, (not granite) what can i do to repair this or even fix it? Can i do something to prevent it from spreding or getting dirt or stuff stuck into the cracks? Not a lot you can do, you might be able to hide it a little if you try to fill the scratches with a coloured wax. Melt it in and scrape off the excess so it is flush. DON'T use metal to do this. I use a scrap of Formica held at 90 degrees to the surface and scrape away. This happened to me also! Very frustrating!! But, there is nothing you can do to fix it. However, I havent' had any problems of it spreading or getting dirt in it. Several years later, I don't even notice it. You didn't state what type of material the counter tops are made of, so it's difficult to properly answer your question. I'd contact the installer, since they are brand new, and ask them how the tops might be repaired. Some materials can be sanded and polished, while others would have to be replaced. Honestly, if its a formica countertop like I believe it is, yu are screwed. One person suggested melting some similar colored wax into the cuts which is what I would recommend also without replacing whole top. If that doesnt work, you have to decide wether you can live with it or replace it. How about splitting the cost with tthe person who cut the limes on it. You can only try.. You will definitely want to seal them up with something like the wax suggested to keep moisture and dirt out. If you dont the moisture will cause the top to delaminate and peel off if its substrate causing bubbling under the formica surface. If your counter top is square tile-that section can be replaced (hopefully you kept some extra tile-If the counter top is the one-piece type you will need to check with the pros. for lasting and worry free advice. Some of the store bought solutions don't last and give the mended effect. You state NOT Granite, but don't state What the substance is. |
