What do you recommend would be the best to put down for a floor in an unfinished basement?

I have an unfinished basement, in the laundry area, I dont want just concrete...would you suggest a carpet, lino or tiles. Would it be wise to put tiles down if the walls arent built?

Go for carpet. Get a carpet rem, it will be cheap. You can get something you like later if you finish the area. Do not paint, It will be hard to put down tile or lino if the concrete is painted. You will need to remove 99% of it before you do.

The most popular floor choice for basement floors is painting your floor.

I would suggest a kit like Top Secret Coatings Super Fleck coatings system, it adheres beautifully with very little prep work and actually becomes part of the concrete floor.

It lasts forever, looks beautiful, and well never scratch, peel, wear off. Also it is water proof which prevents mold, it is resistent to chemical spills, and damages from heavy objects like fridges, saws, and yard stuff.

Which is amazing if you compare this performance and longevity to carpet, lino or tiles. It looks very cheerful and artistic and it won't need to be replaced, ever!

I hope you find something you are happy with, good luck!

If u live in a basement that might flood, then carpet is out of the question. I would just paint it with concrete paint. If u want to be fancy, then I would add heated floors to tiles. Adding heated floors is great when u walk down there and your feet are so warm instead of stepping on cold floors. It does not cost that much to add heated floors.

I used to have an indoor/outdoor carpet in my laundry area and it worked fine for years. Then I had my townhouse painted and wanted some changes in the flooring in the bathrooms, kitchen, living room and hallway that leads to the laundry area. I had the entire hallway plus the laundry done in ceramic tiles and have never been sorry. It's an easy clean-up no matter what happens, looks terrific and adds to the value of the house. If you're going to finish the basement one day, it won't really matter what you have down beforehand and having a really nice floor down there may just give you the incentive to finish it adding even more value to the house and giving you more living space! Good luck.

I'd definitely go with ceramic tiles since it's in a laundry area (possible water spills) and since basements tend to be damp. The increased humidity of the basement would ruin other flooring types quicker than if they were in a living room for instance. You can build walls on top of tile later, or if you know where the walls will go, draw it out on the floor and skip the tiles there.

Paint.

TRY LUMBER LIQUIDATORS . COM FOR WOOD OR HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT PAINTING IT? THEY HAVE SOME REALLY GOOD CONCRETE PAINT NOW. OR EVEN STAINING IT . LOOK AT HGTV. COM ALSO GOOD LUCK

I like the idea of painting it and then put down a throw rug. One that you can easily roll up in case of flooding.

If you do not have flooding, hardwood would be best if you plan on selling your house someday.

Carpet picks up smells too easily. I'd stay away from wall to wall carpet.
