How do I remove sticky film from hardwood banister?

The banister on my staircase has a sticky residue on it. I've tried Murphy's, Good for Wood and just plan hot soapy water. How can I get the hardwood to a natural smooth finish without totally refinishing it?

Try Greased Lightning. It works like a charm, and won't damage the wood. It's cheap, too. You can get it at Dollar General or Home Depot. It also works for alot of other stuff around the house (especially in the kitchen). I swear by this stuff.

PS- Goo Gone will work great, too, but it will damage the finish.

get "goo gone" it works great...then after the sticky stuff is gone, use oil soap... it will make it shiny and **** and span

it appears that u have not been able to remove the sticky film even with hot water...u must not cover more than one foot area at a time.. pour hot water on one foot area, immediately follow with a medium rough cloth again dipped in hot water... scrub that first one foot area , now gradually go on ..u might loose some sheen from woodwork, but that is worth.. for future..banister must be wiped with plain cloth every 2nd day.. to avoid the above problem

Murphy's oil soap and water (paste or liquid) and water it will cut the goo without dammage smells good too. works good on leather sofas etc.I used to use it on my saddle .

The bleach was a great start. Strart over with a bleach and water solition - bucket of warm water, 2 cups of bleach, 3-4 drops of dish soap. scrub with a brush. Wear gloves. Let dry in the sun....
