How to wire or add the motion light at porch?

I have one light but swithch inside the house. It is to dark when I open the door before open the light. I need one auto turn on by motion and turn off auto for while. Thanks.

If you buy a fixture with a built-in motion detector all you will need to do is to replace the old fixture with the new one. You can then leave your interior light switch on all the time and the outside light will only come on when motion is detected.

Try using a photo sensing socket adapter which detects the presence of light and during dusk the light comes on. Very cheap and sold at most all local hardware stores.

A motion adapter probably won't work as expected unless your light bulb is in range of you while your walking. You could try then take it back if it didn't work.

Make sure to turn off the switch first before applying adapters and stick with your typical Edison base bulbs as fluorescents can cause problems with solid state devices.

The motion sensor light could replace the light fixture you now have.

If you want to use the same fixture with a separate motion sensor it gets a bit more complicated. Take a look at X 10 on the Internet. They sell gadgets that can detect motion and turn things on and off. You would need a motion sensor, transmitter and a special light switch to replace the existing one. You could still turn the porch light on manually, and turn off the motion sensing element. Also you could buy a chime unit which would sound whenever the sensor detects motion.

Placement of the motion sensor is important. It can be triggered by sunlight, motion of trees and shrubs, and small animals.

TRY BUYING JUST THE MOTION SENSOR.YOU UNSCREW THE BULB,SCREW IN THE SENSOR. TEN MINUTE JOB!I HAVE 3 THEY WORK GREAT.aND YOU DONT NEED TO BE AN ELECTRICIAN !
