Building a Studion Box: What is the name of the wood to use to build a studio box?

My dad surprised me and build my studio box but he took back the wood I bought. A man suggested to use the wood that is used in subwoofer boxes. The box looks GREAT but when my artist records, I can barely hear her on the mic. But If im on the outside talking, the mic(which is in the box) picks me up better than my artist who is in the box. That is weird! So now Im wondering if the wood wasnt a good selection. I haven't bought the acoustic yet but the problem isnt the echo. It seems as if the box already drowning her sound out without the acoustic. Can someone please please give me some tips?! My dad did so good on the box and I would hate the problem to be the wood.

It's called Particle Board.... use Silicone to fill in every corner joint and use contact cement to glue the inside with speaker carpet or gray soft foam insulation.

This is one of those times when I will suggest MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)
