I have a dresser that was in a barn and smells like rat urine. How can I get rid of the smell? |
I have tried cedar and straight bleach to no avail. The bleach was a great start. Strart over with a bleach and water solition - bucket of warm water, 2 cups of bleach, 3-4 drops of dish soap. scrub with a brush. Wear gloves. Let dry in the sun. Sand all the raw wood with 100 grit sand paper. Dust out. Set in the sun for a day or so. Bring in at night or in the rain. Smell again. If it still smells. Seal with a paint or a clear sealer. Get rid of the dresser. Take the urinating rats out of the drawers. try spreading coffee powder in it. There is a spray product that uses titanium dioxide for odor removal. This is a catalyst that will create oxides when exposed to u.v. light which have been proven extremely effective in the destruction of odor-causing gases. It looks like the smallest quantity is available for $15.00. I have never used the product, but I know the science behind it is sound. You might try sodium metabisulfite - it's used sometimes to deodorize odors from rotting or animal relicts. |
