How do you clean pee out of a mattress, or at least eliminate the smell?

My roommate came back drunk and peed on our guest bed. I took the comforter and sheets off and washed them, but the mattress reeks!

First, I would blot up and dry as much of it as you can. After that, there are a couple of options you can try. You can try using upholstery cleaners, mild detergent mixed with water or lightly spray white vinegar (especially since there is a smell). You want to make sure that you do not soak the mattress though. Letting liquid get down into the foams will break down the mattress faster and could cause mildew or mold, which would be much worse than the stains. Use a damp sponge to apply your cleaning mixture and blot it dry. After you are finished let it air dry completely. If there is still a smell after it has finished drying, try sprinkling the effected area with baking soda and letting it sit for an afternoon. Then vacuum it up. Just make sure there is no vinegar still left on there.

I would also suggest purchasing a mattress protector. There are plenty of protectors now that don't give that "plastic sheet" feeling and still give complete protection from not only spills and liquids but also dust mites. Something like this would be a good solution:

Thats gross!
I have cleaned a mattress, succesfully, when my child wet the bed .First, get lots of hot water into it put biological washing powder and a sponge. Put rubber gloves on and really scrub the mattress. Also spray with an anti-bacterial spray. Then (this is the important bit) get an old dry towel and try to blot most of the liquid then put the mattress on its side and let it dry in a very well-ventilated area, outside in the sun if possible. However, all this works when you can wash it soon after its been peed on.I f its already dried you may not be able to do anything but buy a new mattress and ask the roommate to pay for it-He should be cleaning it too!

In the long run, a new mattress might be in order. You probably don't need more than the top, not the box spring. Problem is the pee is beyond the reach of the cleaners. They work on the upper half inch or so. If Blotto really let loose, that pee is down into the fiber filling.

There is a product called Urine Out sold in medical supply stores. Pee is tough as the left behind crystals are what causes the stink problem. Start with a wet vac, towels for blotting, at get to it. Actually Blotto needs to buy a new mattress. This time cover it with a medical supply waterproof mattress........Blotto could have a drinking problem and may repeat this.

It would be a good idea to take the mattress outside and let the fresh air help it out. While it is outside, spray Febreeze all over. The best thing is to toss the mattress and have your roomie pay for a new mattress and a mattress pad. He or she will learn their lesson. It is called "tough love". No mattress, no guests, no more drunk roommate

oie, you have quite the roommate!

Use a 50:50 vinegar:water solution. Use a cloth and dab it on the stain. You'll have to do this quite a bit! have a bucket of the vinegar solution close at hand to rinse out the cloth and reapply...

You know, I would get your roommate to do it! EWW!

Air dry in out in the sun after spraying febreeze or adding some drops of essential oils on it. If still no luck try getting a steam mop and running it over it. You could also try to get a professional in to clean it. Good luck. :)

rent the" rug doctor" with the upholstery attachment,it will clean the mattress thoroughly (i might also suggest adding a little bleach to the solution to disinfect(give your roommate the bill!)

Laundry section at Walmart sells Borax - instructions for getting urine out of mattresses is on the box. It's less than $3.... and I have a toddler.....it works and it's easy.

do as elemento suggest and i would dry it under the sun this will kill the bacteria and the smell
