What is the explanation for casual clothes when washed tend to stretch widthwise and shrink lengthwise? |
I was wondering if the warp and the weft of the fabric were made of different materials. Check the clothing label for washing care instructions. If machine wash be sure you are using the right temperature. If there is no indication of temp use cold water. Cold water will not effect the elasticity of material, keeps colors bright, and does not shrink clothing. Some materials require a "delicate" setting for wash because the agitation of the machine stretches the material. Less expensive clothing will sometimes still shrink or stretch. When in doubt wash on delicate setting, cold water, using a mild detergent. cheack wash labels.... ALWAYS lol Casual clothes are often made from knitted materials rather than woven, and tend to distort as you describe. You can try pulling them into shape when wet, this works best when line-drying. Give them a good pull lengthways when they come out of the washer. That usually works for me. Because they tend to be made of knitted (jersey) fabrics. |
