Why do they have troughs close to the floor along the bar in old taverns? |
You know where you would usually put your feet on a brass poll, or a wooden step at the bottom of the bar. Well I've seen two different bars with a trough there. I asked the people who worked there, but they said they had no idea. It was there when they bought the place. It was used to spit chewing tobacco in so that the floor would not get all gucked up. Chewing tobacco was very popular in the old days and they had to have some place to spit it, so they put troughs that could be washed out or spitoons around the tavern for the men to spit in. The spitoons were a large pot with a large bottom a narrow neck and a large hole in the neck with a wide rim on them, in case they missed. Gross huh? because back in the day they had horses |
