Why do people add a splash of water to their whiskey?

i mean i'm no whiskey expert.
though i do mostly drink johnnie black on ice or on its own at room temp (as i am enjoying now)

anyway

why splash some water in there when you can just get a glass of water on the side.
this way you can enjoy the flavours of the drink on its own, and if you want that variation the water gives you can sip a touch of water right before taking a sip of your whiskey.

the water in your mouth will give you that different flavour. annnd you can even mix up the amounts of water

all the water splashers, wouldnt you think this would be a smarter way to go about it?

the idea is different flavours from each sip, keeping it exciting..
splashing water is boring lol

:p

thoughts?

adding water is not about
'not being able to handle 40% alcohol'
lol :p

it releases different flavours

try it =)

i just think why add it to the glass of whiskey, when you can keep the whiskey pure and have the water on the side

Some people just can't handle the sensation of 40% alcohol going into their mouth straight. Watering it down lets them enjoy the flavor without losing their cookies in the process.

this is what concerns you? Just drink your drink and ignore other people

With scotch, it takes a little water to make the flavor and aroma "bloom". This is considered the proper way to enjoy scotch. Try it and you'll see why. Bourbon, I drink straight up.

lol same reason they add ice to their beverage i do never understand that maybe they`re just not guts enough to drink it downrite the way its meant to be ingested

I believe it's to tone down the burning sensation of whiskey going down your throat.

IT TAKES THE BITE OUT OF THE FIRST SIP...AS THE WHISKY PASSES OVER THE TOUNGE IT IS ACTUALLY BEING ABSORBED INTO THE BLOODSTREAM..A TOUCH OF WATER LESSENS THE SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM...NOTHING WRONG WITH IT.

A splash of water is said to make the whiskey "Bloom". It is said to release the aroma and enhance the flavor is the drink.

Never understood why people want to drown their drink!

only in Americans drink good scotch on the rocks.
Blended and single malt scotch with a splash of water will bring out the bouquets of the whiskey or whisky. Irish Bourbon included.

With scotch whiskey: once the aging process for scotch is complete, it is run over chilled copper tubing and chilled to approximately 36 degrees over several hours. Then the chilled scotch is poured into the bottle. If the scotch is a blend of several different whiskeys, then there is no need to add water. However, if the scotch is a single malt Nadurra then it is naturally chilled in the bottle. In order to bring forth all the flavor of the scotch the addition of a little water is recommended.
In the case of bourbon whiskey or American or Canadian whiskey, it is added to reduce the strength of the flavor which many drinkers in North America find too strong for their tastes. By the way, you were correct in that only in North America do whiskey drinkers add ice to their drinks. Most of the world drinks their whishey "neat" no ice, no water.

some people can't handle real whiskey.
