What does Gaelic mean when referring to the origin of names?

I thought it meant Scottish until I saw that as an origin by itself. Does it mean Irish?

There are 3 Gaelic languages: Scottish Gaelic, Irish and Manx. If someone says a name is Gaelic, it could mean either of these three. Irish people do not refer to their language as Gaelic; we refer to it as Irish (or Gaeilge when speaking Irish).

It means Irish.

ITS SCOTTISH AND IRISH ACTUALLY

sorry caps!

infact a lot of north east english people have gaelic heritage and use gaelic words because the scottish/english borders were fought over for a long time and the boundaries shifted so some English names can come from gaelic origins too :o)

Gaelic is its own language, spoken in parts of Scotland and Ireland. Usually people in those areas know both Gaelic and English. Gaelic names usually have an english equivalent, like Iain = John

yes, gaelic was the language spoken in old ireland. it's still spoken by many.

Gaelic is the language of the Celts. The Celts were spread throughout Ireland, Scotland and even France. Both Scottish and Irish are based on the old Celtic language (much like French and Spanish are based on Latin). Both Scottish and Irish speakers refer to their language as Gaelic, but clearly they are pretty different today.

Hope that helps.
